The much-anticipated Refreshed Tesla Model 3 Performance (sadly not officially dubbed Ludicrous) is finally available for order! After a lengthy wait, Tesla has started accepting orders for the new Model 3 Performance as of April 23, 2024.
Let’s dive right into the specs of the new Performance Model 3. It comes with a top speed of 163mph, just 1mph faster than its predecessor. While this might seem unimpressive, the updated 0-60 time might leave you feeling the same way, clocking in at just 2.99 seconds, shaving off 0.1 seconds from the earlier model’s 3.1 seconds. While sounding unimpressive, this slight improvement can make a significant difference in how fast the vehicle feels. Tesla credits this largely to the new, more powerful yet more efficient rear motor, which delivers a 22% increase in continuous power, a 32% boost in peak power, and a 16% rise in peak torque. Together, the rear and front motors can create a combined 510hp, marking notable performance improvements across the board. However, the range has slightly decreased to 298 miles of EPA-rated range, down from the previous 315 miles, but if this number is more accurate this time around, this would actually be a great improvement compared to the outgoing Model 3 Performance.
In terms of design, the new Model 3 Performance maintains the overall look of the recently launched “Reengineered Model 3” but with some sportier bits here and there. It features new front air vents, a new carbon-fiber spoiler at the rear, and custom Pirelli P Zero 4 tires designed for better traction and minimal traction control interventions. These changes reportedly reduce drag by 5%, decrease lift by 36%, and improve the front-to-rear lift balance by 55%. Additionally, a brand-new adaptive suspension system has been included to automatically adjust to driving conditions, improving both handling and ride comfort.
Inside, the new Model 3 Performance is equipped with upgraded seats that offer better support and sportiness, complete with a Performance badge between the head and backrest. They also retain the heating and ventilation of the standard Model 3 seats. The dash now features a new carbon fiber trim, adding a sporty touch to the interior. As for the rest of the interior, it remains largely similar to that of the base Model 3, which is by no means a bad thing.
On the software front, Tesla has introduced their new Track Mode V3, providing enhanced control over motor controls, suspension, powertrain cooling, and the Vehicle Dynamics Controller (VDC), a feature that track enthusiasts will surely appreciate.
Overall, these improvements make the new Model 3 Performance a substantial upgrade over the outgoing model. Moreover, it’s the only Tesla Model 3 trim eligible for the full $7,500 point-of-sale tax credit. Priced at $52,990 before the tax credit and $45,490 after, with its performance improvements, additional features, and build quality enhancements, the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance looks to be a strong contender in the performance vehicle category. According to Tesla’s website, deliveries are expected between May and June of 2024, though it remains to be seen if there will be delays as the Standard RWD and Long Range models have experienced.
