Tesla is now offering the Cybertruck to anyone willing to pay $100,000 in the U.S. This comes as the company has reportedly delivered only about 25,000 Cybertrucks to U.S. reservation holders.

Recently, Tesla began inviting those who reserved the Cybertruck just weeks ago to proceed with their orders, which raised eyebrows considering the supposed backlog of over a million reservations. However, it appears that Tesla has delivered far fewer units than anticipated, leading to questions about the true level of demand.

In a surprising move, Tesla has now seemingly abandoned its reservation process in the U.S., allowing anyone to place an order for the Cybertruck. Tesla’s U.S. order page currently indicates that buyers opting for the dual motor version of the Cybertruck could receive their vehicle as early as this month or by the next. This suggests that the company may have exhausted its pool of U.S. reservation holders.

To broaden its reach across North America, Tesla may need to open orders for non-Foundation Series Cybertrucks. The Foundation Series, while bundling options for a $20,000 discount, adds the same amount to the truck’s price if buyers do not want the included options.

Analysis

It’s possible that only a small fraction of U.S. reservation holders will follow through with their Cybertruck orders. Some may argue that the limited availability of the Foundation Series is to blame, but that claim has yet to be confirmed.

Some skeptics believe the initial seven-figure reservation count was overly optimistic from the start. The projected prices at the time seemed unlikely given the Cybertruck’s size, expected battery capacity, and the costs associated with its unique body materials and complex assembly.

If Tesla removes the Foundation Series option, it may prompt a few more reservation holders to complete their purchases. However, even without this series, Tesla faces a potentially limited market for the Cybertruck in North America, particularly at the current price points, which are roughly 50% higher than those announced during its 2019 unveiling.
