For a long time, Tesla has been known for its unusual and fun features and easter eggs included in their vehicles. Whether it’s the built-in whoopee cushion mode, light shows, or games integrated into the vehicle, there always seems to be some fun feature for drivers to enjoy. One of the lesser-known yet impressive features available in 2022 and later Tesla Model X and S vehicles is the ability to run Steam and most of its game library within the car. For those not familiar, Steam is a PC gaming client where players can purchase and launch their favorite games. Having the capability to run PC games in a car was very impressive, to say the least.
Unfortunately, it seems this feature is coming to an end. In recent purchase agreements for Model X and Model S vehicles, Tesla states that they are “updating the gaming computer in your Model X and your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games.” Although this statement specifically refers to the Model X, customers have reported receiving the same message for Model S vehicles.
It’s disappointing that Tesla has decided to remove this genuinely cool feature. However, the reasoning behind it is understandable. The feature was seemingly vastly underused, with users complaining about slow loading times and instability. While it would be nice if Tesla reflected the cost savings of removing the gaming computer in the vehicle’s price, it’s doubtful that will happen.
