From the lack of promised features at launch to charging performance leaving more to be desired, the Tesla Cybertruck has had a pretty rough start over the past few months. While some concerns have been addressed, a new, more serious safety issue has been brought to light, resulting in the Cybertruck’s first-ever physical recall.

The safety concern revolves around the accelerator pedal cover. According to the recall, on a small number of trucks, the pedal cover can become detached, causing the accelerator to get stuck in the full-throttle position. This could put drivers in a very dangerous position, potentially causing accidents with the nearly 7,000lbs truck uncontrollably speeding down the road. Although, Tesla CEO Elon Musk clarified on X that no accidents have resulted from this defect.

Thankfully, Tesla has decided to formally issue a recall, addressing the issue rather than ignoring it. However, the timeline for resolution remains uncertain. Tesla states that the Cybertruck requires a redesigned pedal cover, which may take time to manufacture and distribute to Service Centers across the US. Fortunately, Cybertruck owners don’t need to refrain from driving their vehicles for very long, as Tesla has issued a temporary fix that can be quickly applied at a Tesla Service Center.

This temporary solution involves installing a rivet at the bottom of the accelerator pedal cover to prevent detachment. While some have criticized this fix, labeling it unprofessional, it at least provides a temporary remedy while customers await the arrival of the redesigned pedal covers.

The recall has caused delays in Cybertruck deliveries, but these have since resumed, with all new deliveries featuring the redesigned pedal cover. We hope that Tesla can quickly manufacture and install these new covers for customers, and hopefully, this becomes the only major safety issue with this truck. However, only time will tell.
