The electric vehicle landscape has recently been on fire with news that Ford EVs have recently secured the privilege of tapping into Tesla’s Supercharger network, thanks to an adapter Ford has made available to its customers. There’s strong evidence that General Motors and Rivian are poised to gain access very soon as well, gaining access to Tesla’s impressive roster of over 15,000 Superchargers across the United States.
An interesting development emerged on March 15, 2024, when a Rivian R1T owner, known on X (formerly Twitter) as RivianTrackr, shared a photo showing their vehicle charging at a Tesla Supercharger station. The big question on everyone’s mind is how they achieved this feat. We know that a North American Charging Standard (NACS) to Combined Charging System (CCS) adapter was used, specifically a third-party option, the A2Z NACS to CCS adapter, and not Tesla’s official adapter distributed to Ford owners.
Adding to the intrigue, RivianTrackr disclosed in a response to a comment under their post that they had to launch the charging process through the official Tesla app, and had to identify their vehicle as either a Ford Mach-E or F-150 Lightning.
This is particularly noteworthy because, as recently as last week, previous attempts by Rivian owners to charge at Supercharger stations had been unsuccessful. This suggests a very recent change within the Supercharger network, hinting at possible behind-the-scenes testing by Tesla and Rivian in preparation for granting Rivian vehicles official access to the network. Given these developments, Rivian owners have every reason to be thrilled about the future of their charging options, signaling an imminent and exciting expansion of Supercharger accessibility for more EV enthusiasts.
